Spirulina Hulk Smoothies

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that grows in both fresh and salt water.

1. It is considered to be one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A few nutrients included in only a single tbsp of this powder are 4g protein, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese, and Omega-6 and 3 fatty acids. The quality of protein is excellent, providing all essential amino acids you need (comparable to eggs).

2. Spirulina is a powerful antioxidant, which protects against oxidative damage in your cells. It’s main component is called phycocyanin, which gives spirulina its blue-green color.

3. It positively impacts risk factors associated with heart disease such as lowering cholesterol.

4. It is effective at preventing the oxidation of LDL “bad cholesterol”. When fatty structures in your body become oxidized, it furthers the development of many diseases.

5. Spirulina has shown evidence of having anti-cancer properties, particularly in oral cancer.

6. Doses of 4.5g per day of Spirulina have been shown to reduce blood pressure in individuals due to its vasodilating effects on blood vessels.

7. Spirulina is a popular treatment alternative for symptoms of allergic rhinitis (sinus infection).

8. Studies suggest that spirulina increased hemoglobin content of red blood cells, thus reducing anemia in older adults.

9. Spirulina provided exercise benefits in previous studies. Studies show it enhanced endurance by increasing the time it took for people to become fatigued.

10. In many animal, and some human studies, spirulina has also been shown to significantly lower blood sugar levels. So this may be helpful in Type II diabetes or even helping reduce fasting blood sugar levels.

More good news: Spirulina is not expensive to buy! It is sold in most grocery stores, and you can also buy it in bulk at Lucy’s Supermarket for basically nothing! Consider this alternative to some of the more expensive “superfood” options that companies are trying to sell.

I throw 1-2 tsp in my smoothies to give them a vibrant green color and get all these added benefits. Here are two smoothie options with the addition of this green superfood. I call them my “Hulk Smoothies”! 💪
